Frequently asked questions
QWhat kind of app is Sanlog?
Sanlog is an app for recording and sharing your hikes. It records your route and elevation by GPS, and the moment you reach the summit, your own flag is planted. The peaks you climb stack up as a ridgeline, and at the summit you can leave a short note as an 'Echo' or chat with fellow hikers on the same mountain.
QWhere can I download it?
The iPhone app is available on the App Store. An Android version is in the works, and we'll announce it on this page and the home page when it launches.
QWhich languages and countries are supported?
The app is available in 한국어, English, Deutsch, and 日本語, and you can change the language under 'Language' in Settings. The peak collection supports Korea, Japan, the US, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, and you can switch countries using the country selector next to the title on the Collection screen. We keep adding supported countries and famous-peak lists.
QHow do I sign up?
You can get started easily with an Apple or Google account, and in Korea you can also use a KakaoTalk account. There's no need to create a separate ID or password, and you'll be ready in seconds. When you sign up, you enter your date of birth, display name, username, and country.
QIs there an age limit?
Sanlog can be signed up for and used only by people aged 19 or older. Your age is verified using the date of birth you enter at sign-up. For details, please see the Terms of Service.
QHow is a flag planted?
When you start a hike, GPS records your route. When you actually arrive at the summit (summit zone), a flag is planted automatically, and at that moment you can leave an Echo at the summit. If you don't reach the summit, no flag is planted.
QCan I check in at a summit with a photo?
Yes. If a photo taken at the summit contains its shooting location (GPS) and that location is within the summit radius of the mountain, you can check in. You can also import several photos at once and check them in as a batch. If a photo has no location data or was taken far from the summit, it won't be verified. Please make sure location tagging is turned on in your camera app.
QIs my hike recorded in the mountains without an internet connection?
GPS location tracking is designed to work even where reception is weak. Features that exchange content with other people, such as Echoes and Altitude chat, are available when you are connected. For overseas peak collections, the peak list is downloaded over the internet the first time you open a country, and after that you can view it offline.
QCan I check in at mountains abroad?
Yes. When you choose a country in the Collection, its peaks and famous-peak lists open up, and you can plant flags on overseas mountains in the same way. There are also famous-peak lists for each country, such as Japan's 百名山 and Colorado 14ers in the US. When hiking abroad, please be sure to follow local trail regulations and access restrictions.
QCan I change the units for elevation and distance?
In Settings, you can choose 'Auto, Meters, or Feet.' Auto is set according to your region.
QDoes it drain the battery?
GPS tracking does use power, but we've optimized it to hold up through long hikes. For long hikes, we recommend bringing a portable battery pack.
QMy location or elevation is slightly off.
GPS and barometric sensors can show errors depending on weather, terrain, and your device. Sanlog's location, elevation, and summit determination are for reference only and cannot be relied on for safety or rescue purposes. Before a hike, be sure to check official hiking information and the weather.
QWhat's the difference between an Echo and Altitude chat?
An Echo is a short line you leave at the summit. Only people who have reached the summit can leave one, and others can send cheers (hearts) or reply. Altitude chat is a space to chat with people climbing the same mountain.
QAre my posts and location visible to everyone?
Personal records such as hike journals are visible only to you by default. Only content you choose to make public, such as Echoes and Altitude chat, is shown to other people. Your name and username are public, but your date of birth and gender are not. For details on how this is handled, please see the Privacy Policy.
QCan I report or block offensive posts or users?
Yes. You can report an Echo or reply, or block the user. Reported posts are reviewed and acted on according to our operating policy. You can also contact us by email.
QWhat notifications will I get?
You may get notifications for replies, cheers, and reposts on your Echoes, comments on your Altitude chat messages, and summit flag achievements. Marketing notifications are sent only if you have agreed to them. You can change which types of notifications you receive in the app's settings, and you can also turn off all notifications for the app in your device's Settings app.
QCan I export my hike data?
We're preparing support for accessing and exporting your hike records. If you need it, please request it at sanlog-support@sproutgrowlabs.com.
QWhat happens to my records if I delete my account?
You can delete your account yourself from the account screen in the app. When you do, your member information and hike records are deleted, except where applicable laws require us to retain them. The specific retention and deletion criteria are set out in the Privacy Policy.
QHow is my app usage information used?
To improve the app, we collect usage statistics, such as screen views and feature usage records, through an analytics tool. You can find the items collected, the vendors that process the data, and information on overseas transfers in the Privacy Policy.
QHow much does it cost?
Sanlog is a paid app. The app price follows the amount shown on the app's App Store page. Payments and refunds are handled under Apple's policies. If a feature requiring a separate payment is added to the app, we'll clearly notify you in advance.
QWhere does the mountain information come from?
Mountain names, locations, and elevations are compiled from public data such as Wikidata and OpenStreetMap contributors (© OpenStreetMap contributors), with summit locations cross-checked. If you find incorrect information, please let us know through the app's mountain information report feature or by email.
